The Vietnamese go to these festivals to wash away all sorrow, misdoing, and cruelty: and to return refreshed, filled with essence of happiness and holiness. From 30 Dec. to 3 Jan.: Traditional New Year
From 30 Dec. to 7 Jan.: Rice cooking contest at Tu Trong village in Thanh Hoa
2 Jan.: Traditional wrestling at Lieu Doi village, Nam Ha province. 
3-5 Jan.: Horse race in Quang Ngai province. Women also join the race.
5 Jan.: Dongda victory festival in memory of King Quang Trung who destroyed 290,000 Chinese invaders.
6 Jan.: Coloa festival in memory of King An Duong Vuong who built up the citadel in oyster-shell shape.
13 Jan.: Lim festival in Bac Ninh province. Young boys and girls sing and enjoy popular theater. All questions about love and dates will be answered by singing impromptu.
5 Feb.: Two Trung Sister' festival in Hanoi to memorize two heroines Trung Trac and Trung Nhi who fought against Chinese and declared independence for Vietnam in AD 40.
15 Feb.: Huong pagoda festival. Huong pagoda festival is one of the most scenic places in the north of Vietnam. Pilgrims visit this pagoda for two months since 15 Jan.
New Year: In the north, people have bird contests. The beautiful birds that sing well will be winners. On the Southern highlands, the minorities have buffalo-killing festival, drinking Can wine. In Tay Ninh, people enjoy the Black Lady' festival. The pilgrimage to this Black Lady Mountain lasts the whole month.
6 March: Tay Phuong pagoda pilgrimage 
7 March: Thay pagoda pilgrimage. Water puppetry festival.
10 March: King Hung's festival in memory of the First King who up Vietnam.
23 March: Le mat village festival. Villagers live on catching and raising snakes.
9 April: Giong festival in memory of themythical hero in Giong village.
30 July: Le Van Duyet festival in Ho Chi Minh City.
15 Aug.: Children' s Mid-Autumn (Mooncake festival). Children play lanterns and sing in the moonlight. 
16-20 Aug.: Festival in Kiep Bac temple in memory of the national hero Tran Hung Dao who fought against Chinese invaders in the 13th century. Festival in Con Son to memorize Nguyen Trai, a national hero in the 15th century.
13 Sept.: Keo pagoda pilgrimage. There are many folk games.
15 Oct.: Lantern festival for the moon in the south west of Vietnam by the Khmer people.
